Karkat is a complicated character, and this is mainly because of his blood colour. He is mean and distant to other people, and uses his yelling to drive other people away from him so they wouldn't become attached enough to him to be able to find out his secret. He also uses his yelling to be a leader - the yelling annoyed his teammates into submission. He was a good leader in some aspects - he managed to keep the team united instead of going back to the red and blue teams which would have resulted in more deaths, but under his leadership they bred a cancerous universe which spawned a null session.
Karkat is very self-depreciating and often blames himself for other peoples' failures - another aspect befitting of a leader. He cares deeply for his friends, even forming a (temporary) matespritship with Terezi which he is trying to recover, a moirallegiance with Gamzee, a good friendship with Sollux and Kanaya, and was a shoulder for Eridan to cry on. He was very upset when Kanaya died and when Gamzee went insane, which shows he does care a lot for his friends and isn't just a complete asshole. He often takes his friends' burdens and places them upon his own shoulders, so we can see why he was disappointed when he failed as a leader - he let his friends down too.
